Topic # 6 Analyzing Shapes
Learning Expectations:
* Compare and contrast the attributes of 2- and 3- dimensional shapes.
* Use a square corner (An angle that measures 90 degrees. Also called a right angle)
* Draw lines of symmetry. (A line dividing a two- dimensional figure into two parts that are mirror images of each other. Also called balance line.)
In this topic we will use clues to describe shapes. Here is a sample of “clues” that we will use to help us talk about shapes:
* the shape is a parallelogram * It has more than one line of symmetry
* the shape is a polygon * the opposite sides are the same length
* the perimeter is 32 cm * the shape is a quadrilateral
Sample problems:
Draw a polygon. (A polygon is a plane shape or figure bounded by straight sides.)
(A circle or an oval are not polygons.)
Draw a rectangle. Write as many facts or clues about the shape.
For example: The shape has more than one right angle.
